Part Three
Well below the riverâs surface, Terrinâs body continued to be dragged. Her last breath was slowly seeping through, dark blue, numb lips. Edges of granite slashed her body as it she was tossed like a waterlogged leaf. Before running completely out of air, her body was thrust upward, face-first pressing through the wetness, kissed by the near weightlessness of the damp air.
âYouâre safe now.â The voice she thought came from behind her, but to her memory, all that was there were jagged boulders of granite and a merciless current.
Panicked, Terrin righted her body, wiping the water from her right eye, trying to see whoever it was that had spoken.
âGod is that you?â She called out, feeling a bit silly, but hopeful.
âAhh no. My name is Jacob.â Crouching at the narrow riverâs edge was a young man, who looked to be only a few years older than Terrin.
Scanning him with her bionic eye, revealed he too was augmentedâan implant was just under the skin of his neck.
âIt allows me to shout across great distances and reassure escapees theyâre safe, and not alone,â he offered her questioning gaze. âCome to think of it, I guess you can say God sent me. Since escaping that mad-house myself, I help others start their new calling.â
âNew calling?â Terrin questioned, now standing next to the young man who appeared from behind a brush. His arms were outstretched toward her and Terrin welcomed the large dry blanket he offered.
âYeah, showing them how to turn what was meant for evil, into something to be used for good. Like that wondrous bionic eye of yours. Think about what the two of us can accomplish together. My voice with your sight.â
âUs, together? I donât know what you think we will be butâ¦â
âI think,â Jacob cut in, âand know that whatever the plan of God is for our lives, it will be an interesting journey. You seriously donât think he allowed you to escape that place only to run off and hide somewhere do you?â
âI, I didnât think that far. Just wanted to get as far away as my legs would carry me. I only want to be free.â
âYou are free. Now, we just have to see how many others we can help enjoy the sweetness of freedom too.â
